This is a very challenging class, with many of the students persistently talking out of turn and exhibiting other deliberately distracting behaviours. Ms. Hussain was able to address these behaviours with extraordinary confidence and patience, in a way that allowed her to get through her lesson effectively without escalating potential conflict. It was remarkable what she was able to accomplish in 75 minutes with such a reluctant group of learners. Her lesson and teaching strategies were well-planned and brought many of the students from a place of non-participation to a being fully engaged in the topic. By the end of the class, I believe that many of my students had developed an understanding that mindfulness strategies such as TUZA and take 5 can help them to have greater control of their own emotions and actions. Ever since I was a little kid and despite some childhood trauma, I always did all the "right" things, and basically met everyone's needs, except my own.
This pattern continued well into adulthood. I was perfect on the outside, and a mess on the inside. Remaining solid on the outside caused me to internalize all my pain. Because of this, I was inspired to become a Child and Youth Worker so that I can advocate for young people suffering in silence. My two decades of working in mental health has taught me one thing; there's no such thing as an adult. We're all just children, in bigger bodies.
Ever since we were little, we’ve been receiving messaging from our parents, teachers and society which communicated that we are not enough. We internalized these beliefs, resulting in deep seated fears and insecurities by which we unknowingly live our lives. The adults in our lives were only passing on unconscious beliefs that were passed down to them. And as long as we remain asleep, this cycle is perpetuated through us.
Until we awaken, we can never truly live authentically, because we’re a slave to external validation. We end up in jobs and marriages that don’t fulfill us, because the real lack is in how we feel about ourselves. We define ourselves through our roles in life, only to find emptiness. It manifests in retail therapy, alcohol, drugs, relationships and other addictions. This may explain why the celebrities that we've always known to be successful, end their lives.
Lack of self love is a pandemic. Even the most successful people are suffering in silence. Another example of how this manifests is corporate bullying. Adults are no different than children, in fact, without healing, we can be worse.
By the time I reached midlife, I finally discovered why I was so miserable. I was literally dying inside. I was living a lie as I was going through the motions to maintain status quo. I was living unconsciously. I was asleep. Meditation helped me awaken and live my life with mindfulness. Becoming aware of my thoughts, feelings and sensations helped me gain greater self awareness, which then lead me to the path of acceptance. I truly had to love myself before I could present myself to the world with the courage I needed be me. As Ralph Waldo Emerson so eloquently put it, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” When I reached the stage of acceptance, and really gave myself the permission to be me, it was then time to take some action. Action was a lot more fun after conquering self awareness and self acceptance.
