A well rounded education must involve the integration of soft skills that teach children and youth skills related to social emotional literacy, leadership development and overall well being.
Teachers have a challenging role as they are constantly juggling academics, as well as communicating with students, parents, teachers and administrators. They are in constant contact with different personalities and people of different backgrounds and beliefs, not to mention students with different personalities, developmental and academic levels. As a result, it can be challenging to keep an open mind and refrain from acting on autopilot, which often results in misunderstandings and stress. The practice of mindfulness assists in overall wellbeing and helps educators think critically and act with more resilience and compassion, leading to better results.
Health Care professionals are so busy healing others that they forget about themselves. Mindfulness has been shown to decrease depression, stress and improve self-compassion. Self care is an important component in helping others.
Being a parent is probably the most challenging job in the world. Children go through many stages in life which may provoke a lot of stress and challenge. Adopting a consistent mindfulness practice helps to see things from different perspectives, relieves stress, and helps achieve emotional resilience, leading to improved decision making and connections.
As a Mindfulness Practitioner, I offer sessions from the Mindfulness Without Borders Program. This evidenced based program consists of 12 themed lessons that serve to address social and emotional competencies to help prepare participants to better achieve personal, academic, and professional success.
This is done through the integration of the council process as the way in which a shared learning environment is created to explore topics that result in a greater ability to think critically, and act with more resilience and compassion, leading to improved relationships, mental wellness, productivity and efficiency.
The program serves to address diversity, equity and inclusion as participants discover their own deep seated stereotypes and biases as a result of deep listening and authentic sharing in council.
