As with many of us, life began to take its toll on me , I found myself feeling so lost, so down, so confused , and so conflicted . Nadia led my grade 9 geography class of 19 students today in a lesson on mindfulness. This is a very challenging class, with many of the students persistently talking out of turn and exhibiting other deliberately distracting behaviours. Ms. Hussain was able to address these behaviours with extraordinary confidence and patience, in a way that allowed her to get through her lesson effectively without escalating potential conflict. It was remarkable what she was able to accomplish in 75 minutes with such a reluctant group of learners. Her lesson and teaching strategies were well-planned and brought many of the students from a place of non-participation to a being fully engaged in the topic. By the end of the class, I believe that many of my students had developed an understanding that mindfulness strategies such as TUZA and take 5 can help them to have greater control of their own emotions and actions.
